Abstract: Sustainability and the ability to manage waste in the construction industry are critical to the construction industry efficiency. It is also important as it preserves the environment. The study adopted a quantitative approach via a well-structured questionnaire to identify the barriers to achieving the circular economy in the south African construction industry. Data was collected from construction industry professionals. The data collected was analysed, and the findings reveal that lack of education and awareness, lack of penalties on illegal dumping, and lack of knowledge of CE principles are the three most significant barriers to achieving CE in the construction industry. The study is important as it provides insight into the hurdles to overcome in achieving CE.
