Abstract: Emerging technologies hold immense promise for enhancing productivity and safety in the construction industry. However, a persistent challenge remains: Why are these innovations not used on project sites and by site workers? This study investigates the phenomenon of bottom-up technology diffusion from construction sites. By examining the dynamics at the “grassroots” level, the study explores the barriers and facilitators that influence the adoption and utilization of emerging technologies by site workers. This was achieved through a mixed-methods approach, adopting interviews and on-site observations on selected construction sites in South Africa. The study uncovers factors such as power challenges, lack of trust, lack of training, resistance to change, and inadequate infrastructure, among others. The study also identified the strategies required to overcome this challenge of achieving technology diffusion to construction project sites. Ultimately, understanding the bottom-up diffusion process is crucial for bridging the gap between technological advancements and frontline workers, paving the way for a more inclusive and efficient construction industry.
