Abstract: Business process analysis constitutes an essential prerequisite for business process optimization. Identifying problematic areas in a process and defining the optimization goals are important aspects of process analysis. This paper proposes a novel approach to process analysis that is suitable for both experts and novices. The novelty of the approach lies in the definition of a set of distinct, generic goals based on usability criteria, as well as the classification of problems that can occur in a process. The developed approach supports the identification and definition of problems concerning a business process, as well as the formulation of precise optimization goals. This in turn facilitates the finding of effective solutions and the achievement of goals.
