The Defeat-Accelerated Purpose: How Organizational Failure Transforms Resistance into Alignment
Abstract
Organizations frequently fail to achieve field-level alignment through purposeful communication alone. This paper introduces Defeat-Accelerated Purpose (DAP), a mechanism explaining how concrete organizational failure — competitive displacement, product collapse, or undeniable market share loss — functions as a cognitive phase transition that eliminates the interpretive ambiguity sustaining resistance. Under stable conditions, purpose internalization follows an extended diffusion timeline driven by social negotiation and identity work. DAP bypasses this process: when defeat makes the cost of non-alignment viscerally apparent, maintaining resistance becomes more costly than compliance. Drawing on a longitudinal case study of a major Japanese manufacturing conglomerate, I examine three DAP episodes and one baseline non-DAP episode through process tracing. The analysis yields a four-condition model specifying when defeat accelerates purpose versus when it produces scapegoating or paralysis, and a five-phase process model describing the DAP sequence from defeat recognition to purpose embedding.
